I made this poster about Gerald Holtom for a project in 2013, but ended up not using it. I just found it again and thought I would post it here. Gerald Holtom was a British artist and conscientious objector. He designed a nuclear disarmament logo for the first Aldermaston March, organised by the Direct Action Committee against Nuclear War on Easter weekend in 1958. The symbol was a composite of the basic semaphore signals for the letters N and D – for “Nuclear Disarmament”. The symbol soon became the official logo of the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), and eventually became an international symbol for peace.
